The Assumption and Independence Day Celebration at Most Holy Redeemer Church, Derebail
On August 15th, the Most Holy Redeemer Church, Derebail, marked a day of deep significance by celebrating two special occasions — the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mother Mary and India’s 79th Independence Day.
The day began with devotion as parishioners gathered for two morning Masses at 6:15 AM and 7:30 AM to commemorate Mother Mary’s Assumption into Heaven.
Following the 7:30 AM Mass, the celebration turned patriotic with the flag-hoisting ceremony. Parish clergy — Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Martis and Assistant Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Steevan Nelson Peris — joined parish council members including Vice President Smt. Sheela D’Souza, Head of 21 Commissions Mr. Anil Patrao, and Catholic Sabha President Mr. Nelson Castelino. The special guest for the day was Lt Col Gracian Sequeira (Retd).
The ceremony began with formalities led by Mr Cherish. Lt Col Gracian Sequeira (Retd) hoisted the national flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem. In his address, he highlighted the struggles and sacrifices of soldiers guarding the nation’s borders. The youth then led a heartfelt rendition of Vande Mataram.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Martis also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the spiritual and patriotic importance of the day. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by the distribution of sweets by Catholic Sabha unit.The event was compered by Ms. Shynel Jenisha Pinto.
