Training Programme for the Lectors at Derebail Parish

A training programme for the lectors of Holy Redeemer Church, Derebail, was organised by the Commission for Liturgy on Friday, 13 March 2026 at 6.30 p.m. Rev. Fr. Rohith D’Costa, the Diocesan Director for Liturgy and Catechetics, animated the session. He explained in detail the different parts of the Holy Mass and the various forms of its celebration. He also elaborated on the different liturgical seasons and their special characteristics.
Fr. Rohith then dealt at length with the meaning and significance of the proclamation of the Word of God in the liturgy. He emphasised the dignity and responsibility of the ministry of lectors. In the final part of his session, he offered several practical guidelines to be kept in mind while proclaiming the Word of God. These included proper voice modulation, correct adjustment of the microphone, appropriate dress code, the importance of prior preparation and practice, and careful attention to pauses, diction, and pronunciation. The participants then sought clarification on a few issues related to the ministry of lectors.
The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Martis, also addressed the gathering. He pointed out some common mistakes that occur in the parish during the proclamation of the Word of God. He stressed the need for adequate preparation and practice beforehand, which often does not take place. He also encouraged more parishioners to volunteer and take up this important ministry in the Church. The programme concluded at 7.40 p.m. with the recitation of the Angelus. Around 150 participants attended the training programme.
