Joyous Occasion at Most Holy Redeemer Church Derebail: 31 Children Receive their First Holy Communion
A spirit of joy and devotion filled the air at Most Holy Redeemer Church, Derebail, as the parish community gathered to celebrate the First Holy Communion of 31 children on 4 May, 2025, during the 9 a.m. mass. The celebration began with a graceful entrance procession by the communicants along with their parents, symbolizing their readiness to welcome Jesus into their hearts. Rev. Fr. Joseph Martis, the parish priest and main celebrant, warmly welcomed the congregation and invited everyone to pray for the little ones receiving the sacrament for the first time.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Martis was joined by Rev. Fr. Walter D’Souza, Rev. Fr. John Paul, Rev. Fr. Vincent Serrao, Rev. Fr. Alban, Rev. Fr. Anush D’Cunha, and Rev. Fr. Maurice D’Souza in celebrating the Holy Eucharist.
In his homily, Fr. Joseph shared the touching stories of Zacchaeus and the family of Lazarus. He highlighted Zacchaeus’s deep desire to see Jesus and the joy that filled his heart once he encountered Him. Likewise, he spoke of the happiness that enveloped Mary and Martha when Jesus visited their home. Fr. Joseph encouraged the communicants to embrace that same joy as they receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time.
The communicants led the entire liturgy with devotion and enthusiasm, while the Youth Choir elevated the celebration with their soulful singing. The reverence and participation of the children added a special grace to the occasion.
At the end of the mass, each communicant received a blessed rosary and a certificate as a token of this significant spiritual milestone. The Parish Priest expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the celebration. He offered special thanks to Mrs. Pramila Furtado and Mrs. Dora D'Cunha for their dedicated efforts in teaching Catechism and preparing the children for this sacred event.
Refreshments were served for the communicants and their parents after the mass.
