Derebail Church Olympics Games Back
As the title aptly suggests, a fun filled sports day with all sorts of fun games, traditional crafts' competitions and some innovative games, was jointly organized by the Derebail Parish Sports Club and the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Organizing Committee at the church grounds on Sunday, the 26th of January, 2014 as part of the year long Jubilee Celebrations.
The Games were inaugurated by Rev Fr Peter D'Souza, Parish priest by engaging in a friendly duel of coconut breaking (which is called `Tharai Katta' in the local language) with Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council and Jubilee Convener Anil Patrao amidst a large gathering of parishioners of all ages.
Then followed the Derebail Olympic Games which included Passing the Buck, Sorry, Hat for little kids, Bombing the Station, Dodge ball, etc., for children of all ages.
The traditional competitions included peeling coconuts for men and weaving palm fronds for women. Interestingly, there were many ladies participating in this event, though, it surprised many, as farming activity has disappeared in the city, it was those ladies who hailed from other places and were married into Derebail. Even now, they had not forgotten their traditional skills. It made some of the audience quite nostalgic.
There were some really funny games like LUNGI Cricket, Tennis ball-Hockey stick Golf and Coconut boxing. The games were interspersed with Housie Housie. Sarpotel and Chicken Stew curry with Sannas was available at the venue along with ice-cream and soft drinks.
The Games concluded in the evening after a fun filled day of a heady mix of fun, laughter, grit, sweat and grime.
