Food for thought By Mike D'Silva Back

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It is because of the grace of providence that we could celebrate the Eucharist on the Sunday of Corpus Christi -  Feast of the Most Holy Body of Christ on 14th of June

Since last week when the authorities announced that places of religious worship would be open, there has been a debate if we really need to open our churches when we continue to attend online masses from the comfort of our homes. In response, our Parish Priest in his homily very beautifully said that, online mass is like watching Master Chef Australia on TV – it’s good, but is it sufficient to only watch it or do we need real food to eat? Yes, receiving the Eucharist is having real food for our soul.

Also, queries such as do we need to open up so early? Is it the appropriate time for this? Made me ponder on the first few days after the lockdown was announced and the time when for three days the shops were closed. When shops re-opened, did we have any such questions? The shopkeepers had to threaten that no groceries would be given unless social distancing norms are maintained and the Police had to warn of stern action.

Yes, it is the need of the hour to be prudent and cautious. We need to adhere to all guidelines especially take care of our elders, young ones and the sick with utmost compassion. At the same time, those of us who are stepping out to go to our work places and to buy groceries, to question if it is the appropriate time to open our churches is a question we need to ponder upon.

Today was a day of great joy for me to celebrate the Eucharist with the congregation, and we must thank our Parish Priests and the Church committee members for the care and planning that was done to follow all the safety norms and the youth volunteers for being so helpful and courteous.

Praise God for giving us the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist as a community.
