Father's Day by Reon Sylvester D'cunha Back

Father's Day, June 20th 2021

Each day on the Calendar today is assigned to celebrate or commemorate some particular event at the local, national or global level. Some days are stressed to spread awareness for a change. Other days are celebrated to pay respects for a certain person or a group of people. Father's day is one of them. Though most countries observe it on the third Sunday of June, there are some countries which celebrate it at different dates to commemorate some occasions.

*History And Importance Of Father's Day*

Most European countries celebrate St Joseph's Day, i.e on 19th of March since the middle ages. According to some historical sources, Grace Golden Clayton proposed this day in 1908 to honour the soldiers who died during wars. Similarly, Russia and Mongolia used this day to pay respects to the armed forces. However, all the fathers are remembered on this day.

Many countries did not declare this a public holiday, excluding Spain and Lithuania. A demand for honouring all the fathers arose in the United States. In 1972, the then US President Nixon declared that Father's day will be an official holiday.

Thailand observes December 5 as Father's day because it's the king's birthday. They celebrate this day by giving a "Canna" flower to their fathers and grandfathers. However this tradition isn't observed today.

A father is a pillar of a family. He is the deep root which holds the tree firm. Inspite of all the difficulties in terms of financial constraints, work pressure and other things, they give their best to the family. A father always works hard for his family and he deserves respect and honour.

He pays our education fees and takes care of us whenever necessary. A father is known for his sacrifice, hardwork and dedication to the family. Father's day is one of the special day to thank God for good health and for all the blessings he has showered on him. It's our duty to take care of him when he is ill  and pray for his good health, peace of mind and a better prosperity.

Around the world, this day is observed by having family meals, giving flowers and gifts to all the fathers and grandfathers for everything they did during that time. The orthodox Church and the Coptic Christians also celebrated this day in remembrance of all that was done by the forefathers.
