Pavsa Gammath Back
The ‘Pavsa Gammath’ event was organized as part of the Platinum jubilee celebrations of the Derebail Parish with the objective of bringing together the parish community. Behind every successful programme is a team that works in unity where every team member co-operates and contributes to the success of the event. This event turned out to be one of a kind event in the history of the Konkani catholic community.
The 28th of July saw the people of the parish come together at the parish main hall to taste and relish delicacies and savories that used to be prepared by the elders of our community especially during the monsoon season. Whoever came went back happy and contented for having attended such a unique event where a myriad of tastes and flavors of the good old times left an indelible mark that will be hard to forget for a long time to come. Discipline and great organizing skills were the hallmarks of the event that witnessed more than 850 parishioners as well as guests enjoying the sumptuous spread.
The Yuva Sanchalan team started the event with an invocation to the Most Holy Redeemer. The event was inaugurated by the Parish Priest in an apt manner by slicing a ripe jackfruit and the Asst. Parish priest, President and Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council assisted him in the pleasant task. The Vicar in his message highlighted the history and importance of the food habits that were passed down by our elders and wished the event all success
Mr. Ronald Fernandes welcomed the gathering on behalf of the Cultural Committee. The Secretary, Mr. Anil Patrao gave an insight into the programme while the Asst Parish Priest provided key highlights into the cultural history and prayed for the Lords blessings on all the preparations. Mr. Jeevan Miranda demonstrated a few techniques used in the olden times such as tying a ‘Moodo’, weaving baskets, etc. Mr. Vincent Rebello showcased the utensils used in olden times and entertained the crowd in his own unique style.
The crowd, young and old then came alive amidst the aroma of the food that was laid out, accompanied by the songs, dance and baila of the good old times and the atmosphere turned truly magical. Ms. Denora Fernandes added a special touch to the evening with her melodious voice. The performances by the tiny tots, followed by group singing by the children and the youth added to the joyous atmosphere of the evening.
All the wards ensured they cooked enough food to cater to the entire crowd which was a testimony of the generous nature of the parishioners. All around one could witness people having a hard time in deciding which dish to taste and which one not to taste as there were such a huge spread laid out before them. At the end of the event, everyone who was a part of the ‘Pavsa Gammath’ celebrations had only one thing to say and that was ‘It was a celebration that was never seen before, never tasted before and never done in such a generous manner before.
